5 Things You Didn’t Know About Movement and Your Spine

Your body was made to move! Sometimes, however, movement can be difficult—especially when the bones of your spine aren’t in proper position. At MŪV Chiropractic Health Center, it’s our goal to help you move with ease when you want and how you want.

Here are a few things you may not have known about movement and your spine.

There are 24 moveable segments of your spine and 90% of the neurological input to the brain comes from the movement of your spine. This means that the spine is essentially the engine that drives your brain!

How you move will always mirror your posture, whether it’s good or bad. If you have poor posture, movements can be difficult and even painful. When you move with good posture, the movement should be easier and your range of motion should improve.

If you’re stressed, the spine can sometimes have a forward flexed posture. In our practice, we can perform motion study x-rays to identify areas of the spine that aren’t functioning as best as possible due to stress, lack of motion and early onset degeneration.

Creating a daily movement ritual can help improve your flexibility and lessen your chances of most spinal issues. Consider adding things like yoga or Pilates into a daily mobility routine, as well as bodywork including massage, acupuncture, cupping and regular chiropractic care.

If you’re dealing with any limb or extremity issues, it’s possible that the real problem lies in your spine. In the practice, we often see patients come in complaining of shoulder, knee or foot/ankle pain and we then later identify a spinal deviation. When the deviation is addressed, the pain and discomfort often subside quickly because many times those symptoms are due to compensations within the spine thus leading to an extremity issue.
