The Webster Technique: What It Is and What It Isn’t

If you’re pregnant and have been looking into chiropractic care, you’ve almost certainly come across the Webster Technique. It comes up constantly in prenatal and birth communities, often with claims attached that range from accurate to significantly overstated. So it’s worth taking the time to explain what the Webster Technique actually is, what the evidence supports, and what to be cautious about.

What the Webster Technique Is

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic assessment and adjustment developed for pregnant patients. It focuses on analyzing and reducing tension in the pelvis, sacrum, and the surrounding ligaments and muscles, with the goal of restoring balance and reducing restriction in the pelvic region.

It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster and is taught and certified through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). When a chiropractor is described as “Webster certified,” it means they’ve completed specific training in this technique.

Mechanically, the technique involves a gentle adjustment of the sacrum and attention to the soft tissues and ligaments associated with the pelvis, particularly the round ligaments that support the uterus. The aim is a pelvis that’s balanced, mobile, and free of the kind of restriction and tension that pregnancy can create.

Why Pelvic Balance Matters During Pregnancy

To understand why the Webster Technique is used, it helps to understand what happens to the pelvis during pregnancy.

As pregnancy progresses, several things change at once. The hormone relaxin loosens the ligaments throughout the pelvis. The growing uterus shifts the center of gravity forward, increasing strain on the lower back and pelvis. Posture adapts, sometimes in ways that create asymmetry and tension. And the sacroiliac joints, which connect the sacrum to the pelvis, bear increased load.

These changes can produce discomfort, low back pain, SI joint pain, pubic symphysis pain, and a general sense of pelvic instability. The Webster Technique aims to address the restriction and imbalance that contribute to these issues, which is where its strongest, best-supported application lies: helping pregnant women feel more comfortable.

The Breech Question: Being Honest

Here’s where clarity matters most, because this is where the Webster Technique is most often misrepresented.

The Webster Technique is frequently discussed in the context of breech presentation, when a baby is positioned bottom-down rather than head-down later in pregnancy. You’ll see claims that the Webster Technique “turns breech babies.” That’s not an accurate way to describe it.

The Webster Technique is a method for addressing the mother’s pelvic alignment and balance. The reasoning some practitioners offer is that a balanced pelvis without excess ligament and muscle tension may create more room and better conditions for a baby to move into an optimal head-down position on its own. The technique itself does not turn the baby. It addresses the mother’s anatomy, and any effect on the baby’s position is indirect.

The research on this is limited. There are reports and case series suggesting positive associations, but the quality of evidence is not strong enough to make confident claims, and reputable sources are careful about how they describe it. The ICPA itself describes the technique in terms of pelvic balance, not as a breech-turning procedure.

A responsible, Webster-certified chiropractor will explain it this way: the technique supports pelvic balance and comfort, and a balanced pelvis is good for pregnancy generally. If breech positioning is a concern, it’s something to discuss with your OB or midwife, who can talk through all your options, including an external cephalic version (ECV) and other approaches. Chiropractic care can be one supportive piece, not a guaranteed solution.

If anyone promises to turn your breech baby with an adjustment, be cautious. That overstates what any chiropractic technique can claim.

What to Expect From Webster Technique Care at MŪV

At MŪV Chiropractic Health Center, prenatal care is approached with the precision and evidence-grounded perspective that defines how we practice.

A first visit involves a thorough health history covering your pregnancy, where you are in it, any complications, and what your OB or midwife has advised. This is where we identify whether there’s any reason to modify or avoid care. From there, we assess pelvic alignment, sacral motion, and the surrounding soft tissues.

The adjustments themselves are gentle and specific, adapted for pregnancy with appropriate positioning and low-force technique. The experience should feel comfortable and supportive throughout.

We see prenatal chiropractic care as one part of your broader maternity care, complementing the work of your OB or midwife, not replacing it. We’re glad to coordinate with your other providers, and we’ll always be straightforward about what care can and can’t do.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Webster Technique used for?

It’s a chiropractic technique developed for pregnant patients that focuses on pelvic balance, reducing restriction and tension in the pelvis, sacrum, and associated ligaments and muscles. Its best-supported use is helping pregnant women manage pelvic and low back discomfort.

Does the Webster Technique turn breech babies?

No technique should be described that way. The Webster Technique addresses the mother’s pelvic alignment and balance. The idea is that a balanced pelvis may create better conditions for a baby to position itself optimally, but the technique works on the mother, not the baby, and the evidence is limited. Discuss breech positioning with your OB or midwife.

Is the Webster Technique safe during pregnancy?

For most healthy pregnancies, it’s considered safe when performed by a properly trained, certified practitioner using pregnancy-appropriate technique. Certain conditions are reasons to modify or avoid care, which is why a thorough health history is important.

When should I start Webster Technique care?

Some women begin earlier in pregnancy for comfort and pelvic balance; others come specifically in the third trimester. The right timing depends on your situation. A conversation with a certified provider can help you decide.

What does “Webster certified” mean?

It means the chiropractor has completed specific training in the Webster Technique through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. It’s reasonable to ask whether your provider holds this certification.
